While collagen injections are not a new phenomenon, they are becoming more common with everyday people, after years of finding success in the celebrity world, as well as that of wealthier citizens. As more and more “regular” folks want to experience plastic surgery results without the surgery, questions often come up in the discussion. Here is a sampling of some of the most frequently asked questions.

What do collagen injections do?

It serves to replacing missing collagen, which is a necessary protein that has deteriorated with age and sun exposure, by injecting it into the areas where it is missing. While it is most famously used in the lips, it can be used for cheeks, eyes, the forehead, and nasolabial folds. These folds run from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Collagen injections can reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and smile lines. The more doctors utilize this treatment, the more uses that are found for it. Likely, in time, it will be used for even more areas of the body

What is collagen and where does it come from?

Collagen is a protein found in connective tissue of animals. It is the most common protein found in mammals and makes up about 25 percent to 35 percent of the body’s protein content. In addition to its uses in plastic surgery, a derivative of collagen is used to create gelatin for foods. It is also used as a healing aid for burn patients and it aids in bone reconstruction.

Will getting collagen injections make my lips and mouth look fake and puffy?

Despite the bad publicity for collagen created by certain celebrities who have convinced their doctors to go overboard with the injections, collagen will not make your lips look fake or puffy. When done correctly, the procedure simply enhances your current look and your appearance should be completely natural.

Are there side effects?

Usually complications are minor like uneven texture of the skin, allergic reaction, scarring, and sometimes infection. There may be minor pain; if you experience intense or long-lasting pain, however, you should contact your doctor as it is likely a sign of infection. Also, avoid sun exposure in the time immediately following the procedure so that it has time to take heal.

How long will the results last?

Typically, the results will last about three months and then you will need to have it redone to resume the look. This is a shorter time period than some of the newer products that are currently on the market.
