When you are younger, your skin is able to stay taut because the cells that connect skin tissue are strong and lively. Over time, however, that same skin starts to weaken, and the effects of gravity kick in, making your skin sag and create the appearance of age.

For those that are trying to retain their youthful looks, a type of cosmetic surgery known as a “facelift” is designed to help make your skin taut yet again and give you a far more youthful look.

What is a facelift?

A facelift is a facial plastic surgery procedure designed to remove excess skin that has sagged under the stress of gravity. To do this, a cosmetic surgeon first makes an incision near the top of your forehead, as well as an optional incision above the neck.

The next step involves the surgeon physically tugging on the skin in order to make it tighter, before using his or her tools to suck away any excess and unnecessary fat that has built up in the crevices of the sagging skin. This is designed to help shape the face back into its original youthful look.

Once this procedure has been completed, the skin is then pulled back into its original, ideal position. With all of the excess fat gone, there will be a great deal of extra skin that will need to be cut away by the surgeon before they sew the remaining skin back into place. After the skin has been given ample time to heal, it will appear far more tight and young looking.

How long do facelifts last?

For temporary surgeries, facelifts are remarkably effective. Facelifts generally last anywhere between five and 15 years depending on your health, age, diet, etc. Smokers should refrain from getting facelifts as it can harm the healing process and create scarring.

Is a facelift right for you?

Facelifts have risks like all surgical procedures. They are also only temporary. But they are also a great way to give yourself a considerably more youthful look that can shave decades off of your appearance, and the results of such a procedure can be invaluable.
