Rhinoplasty (Nose Job) - Frequently Asked Questions
A rhinoplasty (nose job) is a great way to improve the appearance of your face and enhance the function of your nose. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions people have about this particular surgical procedure.
Where are the incisions placed for rhinoplasty?
There are two types of rhinoplasty (nose job) procedures, open and closed. During closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are placed inside of the nostrils. This means they will be invisible when others look at you. An open rhinoplasty includes incisions inside the nostrils and also an incision across the bottom center of the nose.
Will I be put to sleep during the procedure?
Rhinoplasty can be performed under both local and general anesthesia. An anesthesiologist will be used in both situations. Usually, the patient will be able to select which procedure they would prefer.
How can I avoid looking like I had a nose job? Can nose jobs look natural?
Every surgeon’s goal should be to provide a natural and balanced result. Your results will depend on your perspective, goals, and nasal anatomy. When selecting a doctor, try to find one who shares your aesthetic perspective.
When can I return to my normal activities? When can I begin exercising again?
Following your rhinoplasty procedure, a splint will be placed on the nose to protect the nose during the healing process. When the splint has been removed, you will be able to resume normal activity, including light exercise. You should avoid excessive bending, heavy lifting, contact sports, and vigorous exercise for about six weeks.
How much swelling and bruising will I have and how long will it last?
Swelling and bruising will vary depending on the extent of your surgery. The majority of swelling, about 90 percent, will disappear within the first three weeks following your rhinoplasty procedure. The final amount will slowly dissipate over the next six months. Bruising typically lasts less than two weeks. Many patients return to regular activities after the first week of recovery.
Will rhinoplasty affect my breathing?
Breathing problems because of rhinoplasty are rare, though they can occur when there has been a significant reduction in nose size. Many surgeons will perform specific maneuvers at the time of rhinoplasty to improve breathing in patients with a history of difficulty breathing.
What if I don’t like the results?
While the goal of all facial plastic surgery is to provide desired results the first time, it is possible to get a secondary rhinoplasty. However, secondary or touch-up procedures are usually delayed for at least six months after the initial surgery to allow swelling to completely subside.
